If you could have all of God you wanted, would you want more? Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One, I'm grateful that you listened to these podcasts and I'm even more grateful that you go into your marketplace wherever you are, and serve the Lord as a minister.
Today. I want to read 2nd Timothy 1:6. "For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands." Paul's talking to Timothy, and we spoke yesterday about verse three, just a few verses before this, about how Paul was constantly praying for other people. Then he prayed constantly for Timothy and he prayed for others. Today, he's saying, I want to remind you to fan into flame, the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. Paul's talking about how he laid hands on Timothy so that Timothy would have this gift of God. But you and I have the holy spirit. We have everything we need. In fact, the challenge in this verse for me is the idea that Timothy would fan into flame the gift of God.
You and I have some control over the heat and the fire and the light given by the flame of God that is living in us. I believe that's a challenge to us. I often said that we have all of Jesus we want. I believe if we would pursue God more, he gives us more. As we chase him and follow him, we fan into flame this gift, the holy spirit living in us, and we can see that gift grow and make a bigger difference in the lives of the people that we interact with every day. This is my prayer for us and for the church, that we would see this flame of God in us fanned into a bigger and bigger flame. so that makes a bigger difference in the world. There are some who think that because Paul laid hands on Timothy, that Timothy had some special gift.
I believe he was gifted as a pastor. Some of us are gifted as engineers. Some of us are gifted as customer service people or truck drivers or welders. Our gifting impacts the difference that we make in the world. But at the same time, the amount of Christ and how he consumes our lives and how he shows up in the world through us, that's between us and him. And it's limited only by us. We can fan that into flame or we can put it out. We can quench the spirit. We can drown out the spirit of God. We can so pursue our own flesh and our own will and our own desires that the spirit of God just dies out in us.
This is our choice. We get to choose today. Will we fan into flame the gift of God in us, or will we let it die. Will we just kind of snuff it out. What will you do today? I believe you can fan that flame. You can fan the gift of God into flame simply by praying. Punch in right now and say, here I am, Jesus, put me to work today, show me what you want me to do and help me to accomplish what you have for me in this workplace.
Pay attention to the people around you. Ask God to show you how he can use you in their lives. That puts you in ministry, just like me. Ministry is nothing but helping other people move one notch closer to Jesus. Let's pursue that today and fan into flame, the gift of God, which is in us.
