What's another word for trust to you?
Hi, I'm Mike Henry Sr. with Follower of One. Thanks for joining me again today on the Follower of One podcast. As I made "trust "my word for the year 2022, I came across several words that could also be substitutes for trust. One of those words is patience and more accurately the word wait, just seems to associate with trust in several places in scripture. It does again in Psalm 37:9, "For evildoers will be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land. Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more, and you will look carefully for his place, and he will not be there. But the humble will inherit the land and will delight themselves in abundant prosperity."
So I read Psalm 37:9-11 in the New American Standard Bible. In verse nine, we're reminded that all this worry and anxiety and the things that we experience because we're trying to keep up with others, or we're trying to make sure that we get the same or better deal than the next person. All of that worry just ends up creating a mess. When instead we can rest in the Lord, then we experience these blessings that He will give us. But often those blessings take time. "Those who wait for the Lord, they will inherit the land." Trust means that I do what Jesus says, but I do it over time. I do it over the long haul. It means that I have to pray for my coworkers, even though I may not enjoy my job. It means that I may have to wait or serve someone else who got promoted instead of me. It may mean that I have to persist through a layoff when people that I don't think care as much about Jesus as I do got to keep their jobs.
There are many things that happen to us as believers in the marketplace, and all of those things also happen to nonbelievers. But Jesus calls us to live following Him, trusting Him, and resting in Him. He just does. That's the way it works. And when we wait for the Lord, we have this promise of an inheritance. A little while and these others will be no more and we will look for their place and they will not be there, but we can be humble and inherit the land by simply trusting God and doing what He says and waiting.
I want to be somebody who waits better and I can't even believe I'm telling you that, but I want to be someone who waits better because I can't avoid waiting. I hate waiting, but since I can't avoid it, maybe I need to learn to get better at it instead of whining about it all the time. And so, as you listen to this friends, hold me accountable. I wanna be better at trusting Jesus, and that means that I must learn to wait. I want to do what He says while the things that are going on around me are not what I would desire, that Jesus doesn't automatically make things happen the way I want them to happen. But if I can wait on Him, then I will inherit the land, I will delight myself in abundant prosperity.
Thanks for listening to this podcast, and thanks for being a friend of Follower of One. Consider joining our online community, where we encourage one another. I need your help, and I bet you need someone's help, to help you wait for the Lord, to help you be patient, and to serve others in spite of what's going on around us. The Lord calls us to believe in him instead of our circumstances, our finances, or anything else that's happening to us. Can we do that? Can we rest in the Lord and glorify him in our circumstances? Today, we get an opportunity to choose in the moment, to pray for other people, to appreciate them, to know what we believe, to serve others, and to speak for ourselves.
These are five easy things that keep us on a mission with Jesus every day, and it amounts to us waiting on the Lord and trusting.
